The suspect surrendered to Kotahena Police through an attorney, police headquarters stated.
He did not possess a driver’s license while police inquiries had revealed that the vehicle involved in the accident was a rental vehicle.
Therefore legal action is to be taken against the owner of the vehicle for renting a vehicle to an individual who does not possess a valid driver’s license, police said.
A 70-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl were killed in the incident while nine others suffered minor injuries after the vehicle, traveling towards Jampata lane from the George Jayawardena Silva Mawatha in Kotahena crashed into a tent yesterday (14).
The driver of the vehicle was unable to control his speed and crashed into the tent while a group of devotees at the Kotahena, St. Anthony’s Church had gathered at the tent. The driver had subsequently abandoned vehicle and fled. |
