Two members of a Russian family who were on holiday in Sri Lanka and staying at a Negombo hotel had got into difficulty when swimming in the sea off Ethukal.
They had been reportedly warned by hotel lifeguards not to venture far out because this during this season the seas are usually rough.
The victims were identified as 54 years old man and 28 years old woman.
The lifeguards had managed to bring them ashore and after providing first aid had rushed them to the Negombo Hospital. But they died on admission, Police said.
