9412 SriLankans committed suicide within past two years

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana in a statement said, 2914 males and 950 females had committed suicide in the year 2010 while 2939 males and 831 females took their own lives in 2011.
The statement also shows that a majority of suicides this year were committed in Ratnapura and Anuradhapura areas, and mostly were persons within 40 to 55 years of age.
He further stated that the reasons for such suicide vary from, family problems, relationship issues, job issues to drinking problems.
Police stated that any person who assists or encourages another person to commit suicide can be prosecuted under section 299 of the Sri Lanka penal code and can even be sentenced to death.
