The Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry is continuously monitoring the situation of Rizana Nafeek, the Sri Lankan housemaid who sentenced to death by beheading in 2007 in Saudi Arabia, Sri Lankan Diplomatic Sources said.

Our Mission in Riyadh is continuously monitoring her situation and get in touch with local authorities, her sponsors and other relevant officials for her release. A lady official visit Rizana on a regular basis and looks into her wellbeing, an External Affairs Ministry official said.

Releasing a statement and highlighting the plight of the Sri Lankan housemaid, the Asian Human Rights Commission yesterday (11) called for a “renewed attempt to get her release by intervening with His Royal Highness, the King of Saudi Arabia and also pressuring the Sri Lankan Government to undertake effective diplomatic efforts to obtain her release”.

Rizana Nafeek who was 17 at the time of arrest was charged with the death of an infant in her care and was sentenced to death after a lengthy legal process, which was criticized by many due to the difficulties faced by her.
