3 jailers hostage at the Vavuniya Prison rescued
[ Friday, 29 June 2012, 09:20.05 AM GMT +05:30 ]
Three jailors, who were taken hostage by a group of LTTE suspects last evening, were rescued in a joint Army-STF and Police operation a short while ago, official sources said.

The prison officials were captured during the transfer of a prisoner to a different facility, by inmates who opposed the transfer.

Attempts were made last evening and night (June 28) to rescue the officials but were unsuccessful.

Prison officers, army and police were later deployed to the location for security purposes while no threats or assaults on the captured prison officials had been reported. For the past 16 hours these three jailors were hostaged by the prisoners.
